Seventh Annual Cherokee Ancestry Conference in Tahlequah, OK
PARK HILL, Okla. – Attendees learned how-to and about tracing their family’s ancestors by
attending the Seventh Annual Cherokee Ancestry Conference on Friday, June 13, and
Saturday, June 14. in the OSiYo Room, located behind the Restaurant of the
Cherokees/Cherokee Nation Gift Shop Building, Tahlequah, OK, capital of the Cherokee
Nation. The location is a part of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex on Hwy 62.
Keynote Speaker on Saturday was Dr. Daniel F. Littlefield, Jr. Director, Sequoyah Research
Center, University of Arkansas. He discussed various removal detachments of the Trail of
Tears. Other leading experts included Gene Norris, CGSM, Cherokee Heritage Center,
Senior Genealogist; Barbara Becker Meehan, CGSM, FTGS Proprietor, Professional
Genealogist; Roy Hamilton, Cherokee Genealogist, president Cherokee Arts & Humanities
Council; Thomas G. Mooney, Archivist, Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc.; Ryan B.
Mackey, Planning Analyst II, Cherokee Nation.
Conference attendees were invited to a reception at the CHC on Friday evening where they
had an opportunity to meet the speakers. The conference concluded Saturday with a
question and answer session. Door prizes were also given between sessions.
This conference happens only once a year. The 2009 conference is being planned now.
